Accessibility at Communico

Every Communico product ships with a published VPAT 2.5 Rev 508 and a chain-of-custody evidence bundle. Below is the conformance status of each product, the methodology used to measure it, and the shared-responsibility model that defines how we work with our partners on accessibility.

Per-product conformance

Each card links to the full VPAT 2.5 Rev 508 report for that product, including a row-by-row breakdown of all 50 Level A + AA success criteria, the Remarks column, the chain-of-custody evidence bundle, and product-specific remediation notes.

Communico Connect is also published against the newer WCAG 2.2 Level AA standard

Partnership

Shared responsibility for accessibility

Communico's software is a platform, not a template. Our partners — the libraries we work with — asked us for content-authoring tools that give them real flexibility and control to match their brand, their community's voice, and the particular shape of their programs. We built them. That editorial freedom is a core feature: every library is different, and every library deserves software that treats them that way.

With that flexibility comes a natural division of responsibilities. The accessibility of what a customer experiences on a Communico product is the result of two contributions working together — the platform Communico builds, and the content each partner chooses to publish through it. Both matter, and both are reflected in the per-product VPATs above.

Communico is responsible for

The platform itself

  • The product software — the admin UI, the customer-facing UI, and the HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and ARIA patterns generated by our code.
  • A runtime accessibility safety net that automatically corrects common content-authoring oversights — home-link labelling, calendar ARIA correctness, low-contrast colour overrides, decorative-image marking, heading-outline repair, and semantic landmark structure.
  • Regular WCAG 2.1 AA testing against every major release, with every measurement archived in a chain-of-custody evidence bundle.
  • An ongoing remediation plan and a feedback channel at accessibility@communico.us.
  • Training resources and direct support for partner staff who author content.
Each partner is responsible for

The content they choose to publish

  • The text of event descriptions, room details, landing pages, and announcements — including heading structure and plain-language phrasing.
  • The images uploaded for event posters, room photography, branding, and page decoration — including alt text and whether critical information is only available inside raster pixels.
  • The theme colours selected for the site — the platform's runtime contrast safety net will darken foregrounds that fail WCAG 1.4.3, but the partner's brand choices are preserved wherever possible.
  • Header and footer HTML. Partners have direct edit access to the header and footer markup on their Communico-powered site through our admin tools, and may publish, modify, or replace it at any time — including any partner-chosen navigation, third-party widgets, analytics snippets, or embedded scripts. The accessibility of this partner-authored chrome sits with the partner's content authors; it is beyond Communico's direct control.
  • Whether partner staff engage with the training and admin-UI guidance Communico provides.
Methodology

How we test

Every Communico product is tested against WCAG 2.1 Level A + AA using axe-core 4.10, pa11y 9.0 (WCAG2AAA profile filtered to Level A/AA), Lighthouse 12, and 34 scripted manual probes run across desktop, tablet, and mobile viewports. A multi-page consistency probe cross-references navigation and identification across products. The full testing pipeline runs against every major release, and each run writes a chain-of-custody evidence bundle with SHA-256 artifact hashes.

Conformance terms

Supports
The functionality of the product has at least one method that meets the criterion without known defects or meets with equivalent facilitation.
Partially Supports
Some functionality of the product does not meet the criterion. Remarks on the per-product VPAT explain the specific gap and the remediation path.
Does Not Support
The majority of product functionality does not meet the criterion. Currently zero rows across all audited Communico products fall into this category.
Not Applicable
The criterion is not relevant to the product. Example: captions criteria on a product that ships no video content.
Not Evaluated
The product has not been evaluated against the criterion. Currently zero rows across all audited Communico products fall into this category.
Chain of custody

Evidence bundles

Every VPAT linked above ships with an evidence bundle. That bundle contains the raw scanner output (axe, pa11y, Lighthouse), the per-probe results across three viewports, per-viewport screenshots, a WCAG success-criterion rollup, the git commit SHA of the code that was tested, the exact tool versions used, and a SHA-256 hash for every artifact.

Verify integrity

Every artifact in each per-product evidence directory is listed in its checksums.sha256 file. Any recipient can recompute those hashes against the files in the directory to confirm that nothing has been altered since the audit was produced.

Customer access

Alternative means of access

Customers who are unable to use a Communico web interface may always fall back to direct interaction with their library partner. Every partner branch accepts event registrations, room reservations, scheduling requests, and every other patron-facing function by telephone, email, or in person. Partner staff are trained to act on behalf of customers. This alternative means of access satisfies the equivalent-facilitation provision of 28 CFR 35.200(b)(2) for every patron-facing function of every Communico product.

If you are a customer who has encountered a barrier on a Communico-powered site and would like us to investigate, please contact accessibility@communico.us. If you are a partner administrator with questions about the accessibility of your specific instance, the same inbox reaches us.
